Shares of Meta Platforms declined after the Financial Times reported the company is considering raising tens of billions of dollars in a stock offering in an effort to fund its artificial-intelligence efforts, citing people familiar with the matter.
The stock slid 5.5%, to $593.16, midday Friday. Meta's shares sank deeper at one point, declining 6.5% on the day, to $584.59, following the FT's article.
Meta has been looking into a variety of ways to raise cash as it expects to increase its AI-related capital expenditures to as much as $145 billion this year, and even higher in 2027, the people said, according to the FT report.
The report comes after Google-parent Alphabet looked to raise $85 billion from equity offerings this week, above its initial expectations due to strong investor demand, in order to fund data-center expansion and secure computing capacity needed to train and run AI models.
The discussions at Meta have intensified following Google's successful equity raising, the FT reported, citing the people.
A Meta spokesperson said the share-sales talks were "pure speculation," but added "we've been clear that huge opportunities lie ahead in AI, and we'll continue focusing on raising capital in the most flexible ways to support that," according to the FT report.
