Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says AI agents will need many of the same controls that organisations already use for employees.
Satya Nadella manages around 100 AI coding agents simultaneously in his daily workflow.
KEY POINTS
Microsoft has developed a new suite of management tools for AI agents called Agent 365.
Microsoft uses Entra for agent identity and permissions, and Purview for data classification and labeling.
Managing large numbers of autonomous AI agents creates significant cognitive load for users.
Microsoft emphasizes AI governance mirroring employee controls, including security, containment, and observability.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving beyond chatbots and becoming an active participant in everyday work. From writing code to analysing data and handling repetitive tasks, AI agents are increasingly taking on responsibilities that once required human involvement. But as companies deploy more of these systems, a new challenge is emerging: how do you manage them? Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes the answer may be surprisingly familiar. Speaking on an episode of the Possible Podcast, Nadella said AI agents will need many of the same controls that organisations already use for employees, including identities, permissions and governance policies. “You need to give them identities, you need to give them sandboxes, then you need to set policies to govern them,” Nadella said while discussing Microsoft's approach to managing AI agents.
The comments offer a glimpse into how deeply AI has become integrated inside the US-based tech giant. According to Nadella, he frequently works with around 100 AI coding agents simultaneously. While these tools can boost productivity, managing them isn't always straightforward. “The cognitive load on me managing this is so high,” he said, highlighting one of the unexpected challenges of large-scale AI adoption.
To address these challenges, Microsoft has developed a suite of tools called Agent 365. Nadella explained that Microsoft's existing platforms are playing a central role. Entra helps manage digital identities and access permissions, while Purview is used to classify and label data that AI systems interact with. “I think security, containment, managability and observability is the way we’re going to have confidence around these agents,” Nadella said.
“The type of AI we build really matters. We need an AI that places humanity first, that always prioritises human well-being and human progress,” Suleyman said. According to the Microsoft executive, the goal is not simply to create more powerful AI systems, but to ensure those systems work alongside people rather than replacing them.
